School update

examples of Symmetrical design

examples of Asymmetrical spaces - the top left pic is my favorite!

some of my drawings - slowly getting there - I think!!

I promised this update some time ago, and since I am already half way through this subject I thought I had better let you all know what I have been up to!!!! 2D is an exciting subject and I am learning lots about the design lingo and how to interpret spaces. This subject is so much better than I thought it was going to be. I love the way we get to use our visual diaries all the time, for whatever we like/inspires. I am slowly drawing more and can really see how drawing is a valuable tool to have to convey ideas to clients. I have also learnt a little bit more about myself and why I like certain looks/spaces. I am a big fan of Asymmetrical designs/layouts, I like mixing straight lines with curves to soften spaces, I am looking forward to learning a bit more before the end of the year. Can you believe next year will be my third year studying!!!!! TRUE!

"How To" Feature Walls

this is my idea of a feature wall, not in your face, not typical and not subtle, but just right. Feature walls can be tricky and can often look dated and a bit try hard, choose your wall/s carefully and the end result will be WOW!

goodbye.......

Last week I headed back into the studio to gain some more valuable styling experience with the lovely Heather Nette King, she was styling and shooting another "Savvy Shopper" page for The Age, but more on that later.

Whilst I was there, Heather and Mike were starting to work on a shoot for Salvation Jane, Jane is about to launch a new linen range and I got to have a sneak peak at it - it will be released next month, so keep your eyes peeled for some truly lovely pieces. On the day there was lots of painting and we had to say goodbye to our hugely time consuming Chevron Wall that we painted for this shoot. This wall has seen many coats of paint and like everything, the show must go on.................. It was lovely to meet Jane and spend some time getting to know her, she is one very busy lady, a Mother, an Actor, Interior Designer and creator of the soon to be released Salvation Jane range, like all of us she is juggling many balls whilst trying to fulfill her own dreams, good luck with the new range, Jane - I cant wait to buy some!

Abigail Ahern

all images Abigail Ahern

I am a big fan of Abigail Ahern, and not too long ago she visited Australia ( i didn't actually get to see her but I would have loved to have, anyway!). Abigail has a store in London, Atalier, she is the author of A Girls Guide to Decorating and is a highly regarded decorator in the UK and also around the world. While her style is not for everyone and certainly not for the conservative souls amongst us, she certainly knows how to create feeling and emotion in interiors.

Having followed her blog for a long time, I am familiar with her style, she loves using dark sludgy, inky hues and she often talks about working the single colour look, which means painting the walls, floor and ceiling the same colour, (not for the faint hearted, especially when we are talking sludgy, inky hues!) purpose being the surfaces blend seamlessly, the spaces are then layered with contrasting textures and patterns and accented with punches of colour. This style is one easily created on a shoestring budget, if you can paint! Dark walls, then search markets and garage sales for furniture which can be given new life with a coat of raspberry, hot pink, or cobalt blue! As a general rule when designing a space Abigail aims for 90% chic and sophisticated and 10% fun. Without going over the top she aims to inject playful and whimsical elements which give personality to the space, I love this idea.......

lucky me.....

the end result - AMAZING!

I learnt lots about painting whilst doing this wall - experiment at home, its only paint!!!

behind the scenes

About three weeks ago, I was luck enough to spend the day with the very talented Heather Nette King, her styling work is amazing and apart from being the most loveliest person, who is so kind and down to earth, her work speaks for itself. She is a perfectionist who leaves nothing to chance. If you don't believe me then take a look at these pics from the shoot and the first image, which appeared in The Age M Magazine today. The night before the shoot, Heather emailed me and said wear some dodgy clothes to the shoot - we will be painting first up - she also mentioned something about Chevron stripes - I had no idea what they were and so quickly jumped onto Google for some pics and tutorials!!!! I loved every minute of the day and learnt lots, asked lots of questions, I also came away with a new perspective on paint - I am now more willing to give things a go, experiment and play, it was transforming. Read more about the shoot here, she even mentions me! Thank you so much Heather, can't wait to do it all again. x

just a pop of color makes the world go round....

if i had a choice, a neutral backdrop with pops of color would be my preferred option. Some color inspiration on this rainy Melbourne day - source unknown sorry!

take a look

this beautiful red oriental cabinet was the highlight of a recent makeover I did for a close friend of mine. I also incorporated a tan coloured cow hide into the mix with a large glossy black coffee table - it came together really nicely.

two things, my space

I have just found two items that must make their way to my place - two lamps for my bedroom makeover and one beautiful butterfly cushion to add to my cushion crush. Both items from Ada and Darcy, they have a great on-line boutique filled with lots of lovelies, take a browse.

Friday love

what is there not to love about this room, the dark walls, the colors, the texture and the rice paper light give it an oriental and inviting feeling to me - happy weekend x

source - interiors porn

lately I have been doing quite a bit of window shopping and just visiting stores that have been on my "must see" list. I love looking at shops for ideas and inspiration, there are some very clever people out there. On this particular day I visited Fenton and Fenton, Nyary 604, Safari Living and Loom Rugs just to name a few. The windows at Fenton and Fenton were to die for.......in fact everything to do with that shop is to die for. I also fell in love with a shop right next door to Fenton, called Geddes & Ronchi - if you get a chance pop in for a must see visit.
